Why Is Japanese Knotweed A Problem?

Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) is a weed that spreads rapidly. In winter the plant dies back to ground level but by early summer the bamboo-like stems emerge from rhizomes deep underground to shoot to over 2.1m (7ft), suppressing all other plant growth. Eradication requires determination as it is very hard to remove by hand or eradicate with chemicals without expert knowledge and experience.

So, Do I Have To Get Rid Of It?

If you have Japanese knotweed in your garden, you will probably want to control its growth and spread so that it doesn’t either damage your property or spread into areas which you don’t own. If the plant spreads from your property into the wild, then that is illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. If the plant spreads on to someone else’s property or public land and you don’t actively work to control its spread, you could be subject to an ASBO and fined.

Can I Get Rid Of Knotweed Myself?

Japanese Knotweed is a difficult plant to get rid of, the process for doing so can be complicated and take time, a herbicidal treatment plan takes a minimum of 24 months. For this reason we recommend using a qualified and experienced eradication company like Elcot Environmental.

Japanese Knotweed can grow up to 10 cm a day with roots burrowing down as deep as 3 metres.

Disposal of the plant and its roots is also controlled, you can't just dump it in your garden and recycling bins. It has to be disposed of in a specialised controlled landfill or incinerated at a licensed unit.

You could be fined up to £5,000 or be sent to prison for up to 2 years if you allow contaminated soil or plant material from any waste you transfer to spread into the wild. Government Guidance

If knotweed is found within a properties boundary, or close - within 7 metres, even on an adjacent property, then the property is considered to be affected and will require a Japanese Knotweed eradication package.

If a property that you are selling or buying has had Japanese Knotweed identified as a problem then it is advisable to request a survey and report on the extent of the Japanese Knotweed issues. A survey from Elcot will confirm the Japanese Knotweed problem, the locations and extent of the risk and provide a full management plan for its eradication.
