A Japanese Knotweed Management Plan is a process devised to recommend the best solution on solving your problems. An initial survey is carried out to establish the exact nature of the invasion which then provides you with the exact treatments available to you for controlling, monitoring and eradicating the plant. If your property has Japanese Knotweed or you’re looking at purchasing a property that has an infestation – it is essential that a management plan has been completed prior to purchasing or that it is put into place if you discover Knotweed on your grounds.
This invasive species is a bamboo like, tall growing hollow stemmed plant that can grow on a wide range of sites. Japanese Knotweed is not a bamboo but a relative of other plants like buckwheat and smart weed. It is native to Asia but was introduced to the UK as an ornamental plant in the 1800s. Since then, due to their dense and aggressive growth habits, they have been classed as an invasive species.
Knotweed stems emerge in late-March to mid-April (dependent on temperatures) and often start with rapid and aggressive growth. As alarming as the visible growth can be, it’s the underground rhizome stem system that is the real problem! These rhizome’s spread vigorously and even a very small piece of rhizome can provide new plant growth on a different site – hence why a management plan to eradicate the plant is essential.
It is extremely difficult to initially treat a large Japanese Knotweed infestation – due to the persistence of its rhizomes – so effective control requires a managed approach that deals with the initial control followed by ongoing maintenance and monitoring.
The extent of the plan and the cost will be different for each site. Generally, a Herbicide Treatment management plan will be enough to prevent the Knotweed from growing. However, if any area such as a driveway, extension, conservatory or outbuilding is disturbed then a full treatment plan including excavation and disposal of infected waste will be required.
